Stairway in Progress...

When we bought this house, I somewhere in the back of my mind noticed that some of the wood grains were competing with each other, but it didn't really bother me until after we moved in. The more I looked at that honey-oak stairway against the newer floors, the more it bothered me. That, and after 22 years the wood either needed to be oiled or touched up anyway because it was really really dry.
So I went to work looking at pictures of how others had re-stained their staircases and decided to tackle the project of updating it myself. We decided that rather than try to stain all of the woodwork (There was A LOT), that we would paint the bottom part to match the trim and the spindles.)
So about a week ago our stairs looked like this:

Not bad, but in need of a little care.
After a few coats of paint, they started to look like this:

Today I started staining and I am can finally say that after all the hours spent sanding and painting and re-taping and maybe even crying (just a bit) that it was worth it.
Here 's the stairs after just one coat of stain:

More pictures to come when it's all finished!
I can't wait!
