You can't really tell from the before picture, but the shelf was poorly installed and actually hanging off the wall a bit. Plus, it only had 3 hooks, which was just not going to cut it for a family of our size. We also replaced the flickering fluorescent lighting which was casting kind of a sickly green hue off the previous wall color. It's amazing what a little paint will do for a room. Loving my new built-in!
